If you’re moving an Oversize and/or Overweight load on public roadways, you must have obtained permission (a hauling permit) from the jurisdiction with authority over the roadway(s) to be utilized prior to making the move.

A “State” permit from the Ohio Department Of Transportation (ODOT) or from the Indiana Department Of Revenue (INDOR) is only valid on “State” maintained roadways and are not valid once the vehicle/load leaves the “State” roadway.

If the load needs to leave a location or reach a destination located on a “Local” roadway (ie: County, City, Village, Township, Turnpike), the move must be authorized by the local authority. Not only does the hauler have a responsibility to request a permit, the local authority has an obligation to review the permit request and, in most cases, issue a “written” permit
authorizing the move.

Moving on a public roadway without obtaining the required permits, moving with inaccurate permits or operating in violation of the conditions of a permit can expose drivers and companies to the possibility of receiving traffic citations as well as unnecessary civil liabilities.
